The Jewish Cemetery in Fez, Morocco is a testament to the country’s peaceful inter-religious cohabitation.
Johanna Devico Ohana, a native of Fez, takes care of this 200-year old cemetery, honoring the legacy of her late father. “Promise me one thing – that if I ever die when I’m in France, bring me to Fez.”, he said, displaying his love for Morocco, where he no less rests. Fez, for centuries the country’s ancient capital, recently hosted the 9th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. The Forum was opened by Andre Azoulay, Jewish senior adviser to king Mohammed VI of Morocco. Morocco is built around a model of openness, harmony and synergy that has seen the convergence of Arab-Islamic, Amazigh and Saharan-Hassanian confluents, and that has, at the same time, been enriched by African, Andalusian, Hebrew and Mediterranean tributaries,” Azoulay said.Johanna Ohana expressed pride that Morocco was chosen to host the event. “For Morocco, it reflects exactly the reality of our image, our culture.”
