Morocco’s Team Head to Japan to Participate in Maths Competition

The Moroccan mathematics team is heading today to Japan’s capital Tokyo to take part in the 64th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad taking place between July 2-13.

The Mathematical Olympiad Foundation of Japan is hosting the tournament in association with the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), the Mathematical Society of Japan, Japan Society of Mathematical Education, and Chiba Convention Bureau and International Center (CCB-IC).

Participants come from different parts of the world and many have already arrived in Japan, reports have indicated.

The Colombian delegation landed at Haneda Airport on July 4. On the evening of the following day, roughly 20 other participants arrived in the Asian country. It is anticipated that more than 100 people will land at Narita Airport and approximately 40 people at Haneda Airport today.

The Moroccan team’s participation in this olympiad follows their recent impressive performance at the Pan-African Mathematical Olympiads (OPAM 2023), which was organized from May 13 to 22 in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.

Morocco secured first place in this continental olympiad, with Hiba Ferchioui crowned “Africa’s mathematics queen,” followed by her compatriot Zaineb Charqui.

OPAM 2023 saw the Moroccan team bagging two gold medals that were won by Hiba Ferchioui and Ayman Hajifi, three silver for Zakaria Dro, Yassir Abousir, and Zaineb Charqui, and one bronze for Maroua Zidouni.

Following this performance, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports congratulated the students who had represented Morocco at this pan-African scientific event and the mentors who had guided their preparation for this competition.

Likewise, four Moroccan students made a name for themselves at the third Arab Mathematics Olympiad in December 2022, taking home a total of four medals.
