Rabat – Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) deployed two additional field medical-surgical hospitals to provide critical medical assistance to earthquake-stricken areas.
The two medical facilities are part of the ongoing relief efforts in the wake of the devastating September 8 earthquake that had claimed nearly 3,000 people and left over 2,900 villages in ruins.
The newly established medical centers are located in the rural commune of Mejjat in the Chichaoua province and the rural commune of Ighrem in the Taroudant province.
The two facilities were established on the orders of King Mohammed VI.
With the opening of the two field hospitals, the FAR now has four medical field facilities in the earthquake-hit areas. The additional facilities are expected to play a vital role in providing healthcare services to those in need as winter approaches.
In a statement, the General Staff of the FAR highlighted the prompt and effective response of the military to the earthquake disaster. The two initial HMCCs, which were operational immediately after the earthquake, were deployed in the Asni/Marrakech and Tafingoult/Taroudant regions.
Since their opening, the facilities have conducted approximately 121 surgical operations and provided over 25,000 specialized medical services.
Even in the face of logistical challenges, the medical facilities managed to offer about a hundred remote medical consultations conducted by specialists from military hospitals, the FAR statement explained.
In the wake of the earthquake, the country has taken a number of measures to rehabilitate affected areas, especially with the announcement of the ambitious $11.7 billion rebuilding plan.
The five-years plan is projected to reach 2.8 million people across six of the affected regions.
